Conscious Connected Breathwork
An opportunity to experience what happens when you give your breath, body and yourself your full attention.
We breathe all day without giving it much thought.
And yet our breathing is constantly changing.
You might notice yourself holding your breath when something feels difficult. Breathing more quickly when you're anxious. Taking a deep sigh after something stressful. Or perhaps you've never really noticed your breathing at all.
Our breath can respond to what we're experiencing before we're even consciously aware of it.
Breathwork gives us an opportunity to become curious about that relationship.
What is Conscious Connected Breathwork?
Conscious Connected Breathwork is a guided breathing practice where the inhale and exhale are connected, creating a continuous rhythm without the usual pause between breaths.
It is different from the slower, regulated breathing practices I may use for relaxation or nervous system support.
Rather than breathing with the intention of becoming calm, Conscious Connected Breathwork gives you an opportunity to spend a longer period of time with your breath and body, noticing what arises within your experience.
This might include physical sensations, emotions, thoughts, movement, relaxation or a greater awareness of your body.
Or your experience may be completely different.
There is no right way to experience the breath.
What might I experience?
Every Conscious Connected Breathwork experience is individual.
During or following a session, you may notice:
- Physical sensations or involuntary movements within the body
- Emotions coming to the surface
- A sense of physical or emotional release
- Deep relaxation or calm
- Greater mental clarity or focus
- Increased awareness of your body and its sensations
- A deeper sense of connection with yourself
- Feelings of self-compassion
- New perspectives, thoughts or insights
- A sense of emotional or physical wellbeing
- For some, a sense of spiritual connection or awareness
There is no expectation that any of these things will happen.
You don't need to have an emotional release for the experience to have value.
You don't need to remember something from your past.
And you don't need to push yourself towards a particular experience.
Your breathwork experience belongs to you.
Why work with the breath and body?
You may already have a good understanding of yourself and the patterns that show up in your life.
But sometimes knowing something and noticing what happens within your body when you're actually experiencing it are two different things.
Perhaps you know you struggle with boundaries, but haven't noticed yourself holding your breath when you're about to say no.
You know you tend to keep the peace, but haven't noticed the tension that appears when there's conflict.
Or you know you put other people's needs first, but find it much harder to recognise what you need yourself.
Breathwork isn't about finding another way to analyse yourself.
It offers an opportunity to notice.
- Your breath.
- Your body.
- Your sensations.
- Your responses.
And whatever else may become part of your experience.
What happens during a Conscious Connected Breathwork session?
Before we begin, I will explain the breathing practice and give you time to settle into the space.
There may be some gentle embodiment or body awareness practices before we move into the connected breath.
I will guide you throughout the experience, but you remain in choice.
- You can change your breathing.
- Move your body.
- Open your eyes.
- Rest.
- Pause.
- Or stop the connected breath altogether.
Within my 1:1 work, bodywork may also be offered where appropriate and is always consented to.
After the active breathing has finished, there is time for stillness and integration rather than immediately moving on with your day.
Depending on the setting, there may also be time for reflection, journaling or sharing afterwards.
Sharing is always optional.
A trauma-informed and choice-led approach
How you experience breathwork matters to me.
My role isn't to push you through something because I believe there's something on the other side of it.
I won't tell you what a sensation means, decide what your body needs to release or suggest that a particular response means something has been healed.
Instead, I guide the practice while encouraging you to remain connected to your own experience.
You are always encouraged to listen to your body and make choices throughout.
There is nothing you need to achieve through the breath.
Is Conscious Connected Breathwork suitable for everyone?
Conscious Connected Breathwork is not appropriate for everybody.
Because the breathing pattern can create physical and emotional changes within the body, there are certain medical conditions and circumstances where Conscious Connected Breathwork may not be suitable or where medical advice may be required before taking part.
This is why I ask everyone to complete a health and contraindications form before participating.
If Conscious Connected Breathwork isn't appropriate for you, this doesn't necessarily mean breathwork itself isn't suitable.
There are many gentler breathing and body-based practices that don't involve a continuous connected breathing pattern.
How can I experience Conscious Connected Breathwork?
1:1 Sessions
Conscious Connected Breathwork may form part of our work together where it feels appropriate for you.
A 1:1 setting allows the experience to be individually supported and gives us more time before and after the breath to explore what you're noticing.
Group Breathwork Experiences
I also facilitate Conscious Connected Breathwork within small group experiences in Gillingham and across Medway and Kent.
These experiences usually include time to arrive and settle, embodiment or body awareness practices, the connected breath itself and time afterwards for integration and reflection.
You don't need to know what you're looking for before you begin.
You might be curious about Conscious Connected Breathwork.
You may want to experience something beyond talking.
Or perhaps you've simply become aware that you spend a lot of time in your thoughts and would like to explore what it feels like to connect more deeply with your body.
You don't need to arrive with an intention to release, heal or change anything.
You can begin by noticing what is already there.
